About Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street About

From the kitchen of Japan to the world. A city of tools where food and craftsmanship come alive.

From ancient times, Kamigata (the Kyoto-Osaka region) has been known as the "Nation's Kitchen" and "Eat 'til you drop."
Behind this are the chefs who have continuously honed their taste and skills, and the chefs in the kitchen who train their minds and pursue the pinnacles of professionalism. Tempered by taste and time, a rich culture of food and entertainment has been nurtured in this land.

The foundation of such a culture lies in a selection of tools chosen with the professional user's convenience as the top priority, and the proven expertise that has consistently met their needs. Herein lies the reason why these products have been beloved by professionals for many years. Please enjoy choosing your own exquisite items, even in your home kitchen. A deep selection and surprising range of products await you.

Chairman's Greeting

For many years, the Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street has been supported by many people through "provisions for trade."
This street is walked by people with all sorts of intentions, from chefs and those starting restaurants to, more recently, tourists.

Times change, and so do the forms of shops and the tools they handle, but the core principle of "delivering good tools to those who need them" has remained the same, from the past to the present.
I feel that the greatest strength of Doguyasuji is how each shop owner has looked each other in the eye and spoken to one another, continuing to protect this shopping street together.

We want to continue to be a place that supports professional settings and a shopping street that those visiting for the first time can enjoy.
Please, experience “authentic tools” and “the warmth of people” at Doguyasuji.

Doguyasuji Shopping Street Original Brand "Tsunagu"

To pass on the “skills and culture” that live within cooking utensils to the next generation, we have launched our original brand, "絆具-TSUNAGU-."
This brand was created with the aim of passing on to the future the wisdom that professional chefs have cultivated over many years and the skills of toolmaking that artisans have continued to protect.
At "Kizuna-TSUNAGU-", we offer tools that are meticulously crafted with a focus on materials and techniques, including 1mm hammered frying pans, Ariake lantern signs, bronze pots, Osaka Naniwa tinware Reiko, Kando pots, and natural whetstones. These are not just cooking utensils; they are elements that connect people to people, culture to technique, and the past to the future through cooking. Doguyasuji continues to disseminate new value both domestically and internationally as a place for inheriting techniques and sentiments.

It has been certified by Guinness World Records as the "World's Largest Taiyaki."

On October 13, 2013, Sennichimae Doguyasuji in Osaka attempted to create the "World's Largest Taiyaki (by weight of a single taiyaki)," and it was successfully certified by Guinness World Records.
The Guinness World Record is as follows.

“The largest taiyaki weighs 11.58 kg (25 lb 8 oz) and was created by Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping District (Japan) in Osaka, Osaka, Japan, on October 13, 2013.”

Through this initiative, Doguyasuji has expanded its appeal beyond being just "a place that deals with tools" to a place of experiences and lasting memories. While valuing surprise and playfulness, we continue to communicate with visitors from both within Japan and abroad. We sincerely thank everyone who cooperated and participated. Please look forward to our future challenges.

We jointly exhibited at the MOBAC SHOW 2025.

We exhibited jointly with the Kansai Confectionery and Bakery Kitchen Equipment Cooperative at "MOBAC SHOW 2025" (Tuesday, February 18, 2025 - Friday, February 21, 2025, at INTEX Osaka). At the venue, various shops and manufacturers that make up Doguyasuji, including cutlery makers, glassware, and metalware, gathered, and we also introduced our original brand "TSUNAGU." Visitors experienced the charm of the fusion of the latest food equipment and tool culture. Moving forward, Doguyasuji will continue to broadly promote its technology and culture through "tools" both domestically and internationally.

The first in a shopping district! The fusion of real and virtual, VR Douguya-suji Shopping Street

As foot traffic to shopping streets decreased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sennichimae Doguyasuji launched "VR Doguyasuji Shopping Street," a community space utilizing the virtual reality platform "DOOR (provided by NTT QONOQ)" as part of Osaka Prefecture's Charm Creation Project. This is a new initiative aimed at promoting the shopping street, attracting visitors, and increasing its recognition.
At VR Douguya-suji Shopping Street, you can enjoy conversations with real shopkeepers and explore the shopping street with friends who are in different locations.
Entering through the main monument of Doguyasuji, "Michi" (Road), it is reproduced with the same shop layout as the actual shopping street, allowing you to experience it as if you were actually visiting the location.

History of Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street

The Meiji Era: From the Path of Faith to the Path of Commerce

1882Around the year (Meiji 15)
The Birth of Doguyasuji
It originated from a street lined with antique shops and general stores, like stalls, catering to many passersby who used it as a promenade from Hozenji Temple to Shitennoji Temple and Imamiya Ebisu Shrine (Ebessan), intending to attract visitors to the shrine.
1885Year (Meiji 18)
Urban development
The Sennichimae area developed into Osaka's entertainment hub, and businesses along the approach gradually took root, with shops dealing in tools beginning to gather.

Taisho to early Showa period | Transition to specialized shopping streets

1912Around the year (Meiji 45 / Taisho 1)
Namba Fire
A major fire that originated in Namba Shinchi turned the entire Sennichimae area into a scorched plain. The current streetscape was established through urban planning associated with reconstruction.
1925Year (Taisho 14)
From antique tools to "professional tools."
The number of antique shops increased to about 20, and the business format changed to a specialty store dealing in the manufacture, wholesale, and retail of cooking utensils. An organization was formed as a shopping street.
1935Year (Showa 10)
Resonating with the Development of the Food Service Industry
As the Minami district of Osaka developed, the number of restaurants increased. To meet the demands of chefs, the specialization of tools such as knives and kitchen equipment became even more pronounced.

Wartime to Post-War: Indomitable Spirit and Revival

1941-1945Around the years (Showa 16-20)
Air raids and shortages of supplies
Osaka suffered devastating damage again due to the Great Osaka Air Raid, and after the war, they restarted with bartering in shacks.
1948Year (Showa 23)
Revival of commercial functions
The red tape was cleared, and the area was redeveloped from a black market into a legitimate shopping district. Chefs returned, revitalizing the "town of tools" and bringing it back to life.

High Economic Growth Period to Modern Day | To a City Proud of Its Tools Worldwide

1970Year (1970)
Osaka Expo and the first arcade
In conjunction with the Osaka Expo, an arcade approximately 150 meters in length was constructed. This completed the framework of the current shopping street.
1993-1996
Arcade Renovation and the "Michi" Sign
The arcade has been completely renovated. The giant "Do" (road) lettering installed at the entrance has become a symbol of the shopping street.
2013Year (Heisei 25)
Guinness World Record Achievement
At the Douguya-suji Festival, we challenged ourselves to create the "World's Largest Taiyaki" and were certified by Guinness World Records. This showcased our technical capabilities as a city of tools to the world.

Now | To a hands-on, international shopping street

Dubbed "Kappabashi of the East, Douguya-suji of the West," the high quality of Japanese cooking utensils and food samples is recognized both domestically and internationally. Today, it continues to evolve into a shopping street where chefs and tourists from all over the world can "see, touch, and experience" tools, attracting visitors from around the globe.
