DOGUYA-SUJI
An Osaka's Special Place who supports Osaka's
Culture
What comes people's mind first, when they hear the
name 'Osaka'?
The answer must be 'food'. Osaka is called the town
of 'Kuidaore',
meaning people bankrupt by spending too much money
on eating.
'Food' is, in other words, the most important culture
of Osaka.
There are many shopping streets in Osaka.
Some of them, for example, 'Shinsaibashi' and 'Dotonbori'
are well known in Japan.
Doguya-suji is not a street like those. Many people
do not know the name.
Even those who live in Osaka may not have heard of
the name.
But there is a street who supports this Osaka's main
culture and people
do come to this street of about forty stores for
buying what they need
not only from every corner of Osaka where there is
a food industry
but from all over Japan. Doguya-suji is such a special
street.
Then how special is this street? - This is a street
solely for food service industry.
In other words, those who are running, or will run
restaurants,
fast food stores, etc. come to this street and get
whatever they
need for cooking, serving or displaying. From refrigerators,
ovens, sinks, tables, chairs, to dishes, cups, glass
wares,
knives, spoons. Variety of sign-boards, plastic fake-foods,
cash registers to lacquer wares, chopsticks, aprons
and towels.
It is simply-impossible to list all hundreds of thousands
of
items displayed and sold in this street.
Again, this is a street for the food service industry.
But it is also true that seeing those items, many
of which
you can hardly find at anywhere else, is so much
"fun".
And what is more, these stores are open to home cooks,
too.
You can buy any one piece of those interesting items
from
the store of your choice. Once you get onto this
street,
you will find very different aspect of Osaka, for
sure.
